About Us

Call of the Earth Llamado de la Tierra is an independent indigenous controlled project. It is currently hosted by the United Nations University, Institute of Advanced Studies in Yokohama, Japan.

Call of the Earth Llamado de la Tierra seeks to provide indigenous peoples with a forum for dialogue on intellectual property policy that will result in a more substantive and meaningful participation of indigenous peoples in the international policy arena and enhance our ability to strategically influence conceptual approaches, policies and practices in intellectual property policy development.

The specific objectives of Call of the Earth Llamado de la Tierra are:

  1. To re-conceptualize the debate surrounding indigenous intellectual property Rights;
  2. To enhance strategic participation of indigenous peoples;
  3. To build a common knowledge base and capacity to respond to external pressures and develop political direction and strategies;
  4. To make debate relevant to, and informed by, communities and community experiences.

Thus, Call of the Earth Llamado de la Tierra aims to enable indigenous people to reframe the debate on intellectual property rights and traditional knowledge from our own indigenous perspectives through our own cultural experience.

The Call of the Earth program centers around regional and thematic dialogues, development of a knowledge base, providing input and assisting indigenous peoples to gain greater influence in local, regional and international policy making processes, and capacity building within indigenous communities and nations.
