Knowledge BaseIntroductionStay tuned for the launch of the Call of the Earth Llamado de la Tierra Knowledge Base, a portal to indigenous led analysis and information, in documentary and other media form, relating to Indigenous Peoples and intellectual property policy.
What is the Knowledge Base? The Knowledge Base will be a repository of information and analysis on intellectual property issues undertaken by indigenous researchers. It will comprise a diverse range of indigenous perspectives, from community issues to legal and scientific. Analysis will encompass the role of customary laws and practices, indigenous spiritual values, and indigenous models of self-determination and development. The Knowledge Base will be a dynamic online facility comprised of documentary material in written and visual form and will incorporate a range of media. It will also include peer reviewed research publications. The first Call of the Earth Llamado de la Tierra research publication is due for launching in early 2006. In future, we would like for the Knowledge Base to expand to include an on-line learning component, designed primarily for capacity building among Indigenous Peoples in collaboration with other organizations and institutions. Reports on specific intellectual property issues and cases in indigenous communities and regions will also be a regular feature of the knowledge base. They will provide the input and profile of indigenous communities taking full advantage of the unique ability of networks such as Call of the Earth Llamado de la Tierra to bring a global profile to local issues.
Material in the Knowledge Base will cover themes such as international processes and Indigenous Peoples, the guardianship of knowledge: examining indigenous cultural perspectives on knowledge related values and practices, issues relating to indigenous human genetic resources, issues relating to indigenous traditional knowledge for food, agriculture and medicine, issues relating to indigenous cultural expressions and Indigenous Peoples' rights in international, national and regional law.
When will the Knowledge Base be operational?
The Knowledge Base architecture will be operational in 2006.
