Christine Sophie Kabuye

Christine Sophie Kabuye is from the Baganda people of Uganda and is a consultant on botanical, biodiversity and local community issues. Christine was formerly the Senior Research Scientist with the National Museums of Kenya. She holds a B.Sc. in Botany and Zoology from Makerere University, Uganda (1964).

Christine's past positions include: Botanist at the East African Herbarium in Nairobi (Botanist in Charge 1971-1994); Ethnobotanist and leader of the Kenya Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge at the National Museums of Kenya 1992-1997; and President of the International Society of Ethnobiology (ISE) (1995-1996).

Christine has extensive experience in indigenous knowledge issues, including in co-Management of the Indigenous Food Plants Programme in Kenya; and as Leader, Sub-group on Community issues in Biodiversity Conservation for Kenya National Environmental Action Plan (NEAP).

Christine also organized a National Workshop on Indigenous Knowledge for Biodiversity and Development for the National Museums of Kenya and the 5th International Congress of Ethnobiology also held in Nairobi.

She was Chair of the Kenya National Plant Genetic Resources Committee (1987-1994) and Kenyan delegate to the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for the Convention on Biological Diversity.
