Donna Craig

Donna Craig is Professor of Desert Knowledge at Charles Darwin University working on Indigenous and arid lands research with the Desert Knowledge Co-operative Research Centre based in Alice Springs, Australia. She holds a joint appoint as Professor of Law at the Centre for Environmental Law (CEL) at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. At CEL, she is Director of their Environmental Law and Indigenous Rights Program.

Donna has over 20 years experience teaching environmental law at University and in training courses in the non-government, government and corporate sector. She has combined practice with her teaching. Donna has undertaken some of the earliest Australian research and practice in the areas of international environmental law, indigenous rights and environmental law, intellectual and cultural property rights and social and cultural impact assessment.

Qualifications:

B.A., LL.B (Univ. of NSW), LL.M (Osgoode Hall, York Univ. Canada). Barrister of the Supreme Court of New South Wales (1977-1991), Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, since 1991 (currently non-practicing).

International Experience

Donna is a member of the oldest international environmental law organization - Law Commission of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and represented the region as Vice-Chair on the Steering Committee of Law Commission (1994-2001) as well as being Regional Governor of the International Council on Environmental Law (ICEL). IUCN and ICEL are both accorded observer status at the United Nations.

She is also the Co-Convener of the IUCN CEL Specialist Group in Environmental Law and Indigenous Peoples. Since 1994 Donna has worked continuously with colleagues from the Asia Pacific Environmental Law Centre (National University of Singapore) on environmental capacity building project for Asia/Pacific region. Donna is a member of the Interim Governing Board of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law.
