Le'a Kanehe

Le'a Kanehe is a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) lawyer from Honolulu, U.S.A. She is a legal analyst with the Indigenous Peoples Council on Biocolonialism based in Nevada, USA, where she works to address the impacts of genetic technologies on Indigenous peoples and their territories and natural resources.

Her previous experience includes self-determination advocacy work among Kanaka Maoli community organizations and conducting legal research for a number of organizations including the University of Hawaii, Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Na Koa Ikaika o Ka Lahui Hawaii (A UN accredited non-governmental organization) in the areas of indigenous peoples', civil and native Hawaiian rights.

She has also participated in a number of international forums regarding Indigenous peoples' rights, with a particular focus on protection of indigenous knowledge, including at meetings of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Le'a holds a Bachelor of Arts in Hawaiian studies (honours) and Juris Doctor degree from the University of Hawaii (honours) and a Masters of Law (LLM) from the University of California, and is a current member of the Bar of the State of Hawaii, Federal District Court for the District of Hawaii and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
