Suman Rai

Suman K. Rai, a member of the Traditional Knowledge Defenders Network, is from the Dumi Rai clan in the Eastern Himalayas. For more than a decade he has worked with diverse indigenous communities in the Himalayas. His work has taken him to countries such as Bhutan, China, India and Nepal.

Suman's previous work experiences include at the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development, Nepal in the areas of access and benefit sharing and resource management for indigenous peoples. He has also worked as a consultant for the Swiss Development Cooperation, Panos South Asia, the Ministry of Human Resources India and the Department of International Development Nepal.

Currently, Suman is the Regional Director for the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (www.atree.org), a leading NGO in India. He is based in the Darjeeling District, Eastern Himalayas Office.

Suman holds a Masters degree in Economics and has strong interests in issues regarding indigenous peoples in the Himalayan region.
