Taiaiake Alfred

Taiaiake Alfred is from Kahnawake in the Mohawk Nation, Iroquois Confederacy. He is a scholar and award-winning journalist known for his passionate and incisive views on politics, a respected orator, and a trusted advisor to many First Nations governments and community organizations.

He holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University and is a Professor in the University of Victoria's Indigenous Governance Programs. He has served as an advisor to the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake, and to many other Indigenous governments and organizations.

Taiaiake is the author of three influential books and numerous articles on Indigenous politics, including:

  • Heeding the Voices of Our Ancestors (Oxford University Press, 1995);
  • Peace, Power, Righteousness (Oxford University Press, 1999); and
  • Wasáse: indigenous pathways of action and freedom (Broadview Press, 2005).
